How to Extract Audio from YouTube Video
Need the soundtrack, lecture, or podcast track from a YouTube video without saving the full MP4? Extract the audio in your browser: paste the URL, preview the track, then download an MP3. Use this only for videos you own or have permission to keep offline.

What you need
- A modern browser on phone or computer
- The YouTube watch, Shorts, or youtu.be URL
- A free FrontendGeek sign-in when you download
- A music or files app to play the MP3 after it saves
Step-by-step: extract YouTube audio as MP3
1. Open the YouTube to MP3 Converter
Start on YouTube to MP3 Converter. That tool pulls the best available audio stream and prepares an MP3-ready download. If you still want the picture, use YouTube Video Downloader or YouTube to MP4 Converter instead, then extract later.

2. Paste the YouTube URL and load audio
Copy the link from YouTube and paste it into the converter. Standard watch pages, Shorts, and youtu.be URLs all work. Click Load Audio so the title, thumbnail, and player appear. Playlist or channel URLs will not resolve to a single audio file.

3. Preview and click Download
Listen for a few seconds in the built-in player to confirm you have the right video, then click the Download button under the thumbnail.

4. Choose MP3 quality
Pick the audio quality you need. Higher bitrates (such as 256 or 320 Kbps when listed) sound cleaner and make a larger file. For talks and podcasts, 128 Kbps is often enough.

5. Download the MP3
Click Download Audio, sign in for free if prompted, and confirm the terms prompt. The MP3 saves to your browser Downloads folder. On iPhone, check Files; on Android, use the download shade; on desktop, open Downloads in Finder or File Explorer.

Already have an MP4 file?
If you already downloaded the video with YouTube Video Downloader or YouTube to MP4 Converter, you do not need to fetch YouTube again. Upload that file to MP4 to MP3 Converter to strip the soundtrack locally in the browser.
When to extract audio vs download video
- Lectures, podcasts, and music you have rights to β YouTube to MP3 Converter
- Offline watching or editing β YouTube to MP4 Converter or YouTube Video Downloader
- Vertical clips β YouTube Shorts Downloader for video, or YouTube to MP3 for sound only
- Silent MP4 after a video download β extract audio with YouTube to MP3, or re-download a quality that includes sound
Tips for a clean audio extract
- Preview in the built-in player so you grab the correct clip
- Keep the tab open until the MP3 finishes saving
- Very long videos take longer to prepare β stay on a stable connection
- Do not use this to rip copyrighted music you do not have rights to keep
Legal & fair use reminder
Extract audio only from videos you own, have licensed, or are allowed to save. Respect copyright, YouTube Terms of Service, and local law. FrontendGeek does not support ripping other peopleβs work for redistribution.
